I was in first grade, sitting in class six points down with seconds left in what, of course, would become perhaps the most famous basketball game in NC State and college basketball history - which was ultimately decided when Lorenzo Charles caught Derein pleading with the teacher to let us out of class early to go watch the game. The teacher said, Finish your sentences. I still remember how long that class felt as the last seconds ticked away.
All of us kids knew exactly where we wanted to be - and it wasn t sitting in class writing sentences. As soon as the bell rang, we bolted for the cars of any family member who could take us to see the parade. It was pandemonium.
Cars with red flags streamed down Hillsboro Street, the main drag leading into Cameron Village, horns honking, people cheering. I remember standing in the street on the corner in front of the old Eckerd Drug Store, staring up at the bus go by with my new heroes, Derein and Lorenzo Charles and Thurl Bailey and Sidney Lowe, coach Jim Valvano beaming from ear to ear, all with big smiles, waving to their delirious fans. It was, in a word, magical.
A few months later, after my dad decided he d endured enough years of being the only Tar Heel fan in a house full of State fans, he moved us from Raleigh to Chapel Hill, which at the time seemed a million miles away. Suddenly I was not a Wolfpack fan, I was a Tar Heel fan. I went to elementary school, middle school, high school, and eventually college in Chapel Hill.
Like many of my friends, I fell in love with UNC basketball. But part of my heart has always been with the Pack. After all, it was the underdog NC State Wolfpack that brought me into the world of college basketball fandom and helped me, just like so many others, discover the magic of March.
It also inspired me as a kid, and it still does, that a team of seemingly ordinary guys, who weren t even supposed to be in the tournament, could come together as a team and defeat one of the greatest college teams of all time and make history. In 1983, I was 7 years old and lived in Raleigh. My first sports love was the NC State Wolfpack basketball team.
They were coached by Jim Valvano. He was a charismatic, funny, and inspiring coach. His team was very different from the superteams of today.
This team was a Cinderella story. They barely made it into the NCAA tournament. In fact, they had to win the ACC tournament just to get in.
But led by Lorenzo Charles, Thurl Bailey and Derein Spain, the Pack went on a magical run to the NCAA National Championship. Their improbable run captivated the nation and became one of the greatest underdog stories in sports history. I remember watching the championship game against the University of Houston.
Houston, led by future NBA Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, was one of the most talented teams in college basketball history. They were known as Phi Slama Jama because of their high-flying, dunking style of play. The game was back and forth, but with seconds left, Houston had a two-point lead.
Derein Spain, a 6 0 point guard, dribbled the ball up the court and launched a desperation shot from beyond half court as time expired. It was short, but it hit the front of the rim and caromed towards the basket. Lorenzo Charles, who was standing near the basket, jumped up and grabbed the rebound and dunked it just before the buzzer sounded.
The shot went in! NC State won the national championship! The celebration that followed was incredible.
People flooded the streets of Raleigh, cheering and honking their horns. My dad picked me up and we drove downtown to see the celebration. The streets were packed with people.
Everyone was yelling and cheering. It was an amazing experience. The next day, the city of Raleigh held a victory parade for the team.
It was estimated that over 100,000 people lined the streets to celebrate the Wolfpack's championship. The parade was a huge party, and it was a day that I will never forget. The 1983 NC State Wolfpack team is an inspiration to anyone who has ever been told they can't achieve something.
They showed that with hard work, determination, and teamwork, anything is possible. Their story is a reminder that even the biggest underdog can achieve greatness.
